How Do I Know If My Brakes Need Replacing?

There are a number of factors that go into determining their total lifespan, such as your type of car, how you drive, the type of brake pads that you use. As a result, it can be difficult to predict just how long they will last. For this reason it is important to be observant of any signs that it is times for them to be replaced.

Here are some of the classic giveaways that you need your brakes reviewed by a professional:

  • Brake discs should be replaced in pairs and after 50,000 miles of use, and brake pads after 30,000 miles of use.
  • Strange sounds. If you notice any whistling or grinding noises when you apply the brakes, you should get them looked over by a technician.
  • Leaks of brake fluid. You may notice brake fluid on the inner wheels if there are any broken seals or loose connections in the braking system.
  • If your steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates as you slow down, this is an indicator that your brake discs need changing.
  • Lack of responsiveness. A problem with your hydraulic braking system may mean that you have to nearly hit the floor every time with your brake pedal in order for your car to start slowing.
  • Drift and drag. If the car moves left or right when you brake, one of the brake pads may be worn.
  • Warning light. If the brake warning light shows on your dashboard, your brake hydraulic system requires immediate attention.
