Why Do I Have to Keep My MOT Certificate?

Although there is a digital record of your MOT test certificate that is retained by the DVSA, it is considered best practice to keep your own paper copy in a safe place, and there are a number of very good reasons for this.

For example, if and when you come to sell your car, your MOT test certificate will an essential piece of information for any potential buyer, and since the general public are unable to access those digital records, they will need to see your paper copy. Equally, you’ll need your MOT certificate if at any time you have an accident or need to make an insurance claim.

Should you lose your MOT certificate, your MOT test centre can provide you with a new one as long as you give them your MOT test number or the V5C document reference number. There is often a fee applicable.
